About Asaya

Traditional Woodcarver | Inami, Japan

Born into an academic family in Germany, Asaya traded physics equations for chisels and wood—a decision that led him across continents in pursuit of traditional craftsmanship. After teaching himself the basics, he spent a year learning in Sweden, followed by intensive study under local artisans in Oaxaca, Mexico. Since early 2024, he has been living in Inami, Japan—the historic center of Japanese woodcarving—where he became the first European apprentice accepted by the town's master carvers.

Through his work, Asaya is dedicated to preserving endangered woodcarving traditions from around the world. By studying directly under masters and documenting their techniques, he helps ensure these ancient skills survive for future generations. His extensive experience with both traditional hand tools and modern power equipment provides unique insights into optimal tool selection and usage techniques for contemporary craftspeople.
