About Asaya

Traditional Woodcarver | Inami, Japan

Born into an academic family in Germany, Asaya traded physics equations for chisels and wood—a decision that led him across continents in pursuit of traditional craftsmanship. After teaching himself the basics, he spent a year learning in Sweden, followed by intensive study under local artisans in Oaxaca, Mexico. Since early 2024, he has been living in Inami, Japan—the historic center of Japanese woodcarving—where he became the first European apprentice accepted by the town's master carvers.

Through his work, Asaya is dedicated to preserving endangered woodcarving traditions from around the world. By studying directly under masters and documenting their techniques, he helps ensure these ancient skills survive for future generations. His sculptures serve as cultural bridges—honoring the heritage of each tradition while creating contemporary pieces that keep these time-honored crafts alive and relevant in the modern world.
